"Our dogs are our Life, not our Living"
Everything started with one dog: Roxanne. She wasn't just a pet; she was a healer. During a period of serious health challenges, Roxanne didn't just stand by me—she seemed to absorb my symptoms, showing a level of empathy that I couldn't explain. That was the moment I realized the Shar Pei is not "just a dog."

While researching the breed and watching Animal Planet, I stumbled upon a documentary about Shar Pei. In it, I saw a lady speaking while holding beautiful puppies in her arms. I immediately grabbed a piece of paper and noted down her name: Dee Dee Wells.
I began searching for her online, found her email, and naturally, I wrote to her. I asked her about the breed, learned her history, and for over two years, we corresponded regularly. Eventually, I asked her if I could possibly have one of her dogs.

Baci's photo on our fridge, where I looked at it every single day.
She then showed me a magnificent dog, Margem’s Just a Lick and a Promise (call name Baci). He was 8 months old and had already won his class at the American Nationals. I fell in love with him instantly... I wanted him so much.
Christmas was approaching, and Dee Dee and I arranged for me to travel to America in early December to decorate her Christmas tree together and bring Baci back to Greece. Everything seemed perfect. I had put his photo on our fridge and looked at it every single day. I asked Dee Dee to have a hip dysplasia test done (back then, tests for POAG/PLL and SPAID didn't exist). A few days later, she sent me an email saying that the dog's hips were not the best. I was so heartbroken that I wrote her an email through my tears.
People I knew from the kennel community in Greece told me: "She just doesn't want to give him to you; she surely found someone else to buy him for more money." I didn't believe that for a second. But what did she do? Three days later, I received the dog's X-rays via courier. She told me: "Take them to a doctor of your choice. If your vet tells you everything is okay, then take him." I went to a well-known orthopedic veterinarian in Greece. As soon as he saw them, he said: "These X-rays show nothing wrong... compared to the dogs we see here in Greece, I consider them excellent."
I was faced with a massive dilemma: Should I listen to Dee Dee or the vet? My heart told me to trust Dee Dee.
Dee Dee didn't have another male to offer me, but she mentioned a friend of hers in Italy who had her bloodlines and happened to have a litter at that moment. I found a way to suggest to George that we should go to Rome for Christmas. And so, while we were having coffee at Caffè Greco in Piazza di Spagna, I said to him: "Stand up, we're going on an excursion!" George, caught by surprise, had no idea where we were headed.
In paradise at Isabella Pizzamiglio's home.
We boarded a train and got off at Latina Scalo station. Waiting for us outside was a lady with a Shar Pei. It was Isabella Pizzamiglio, the first breeder to bring Shar Pei to Italy. She took us to her home in her car, and I felt like I was in paradise... I had never seen so many Shar Pei together in my life!
There, I saw a horse-coat puppy for the first time. I loved her so much that I asked if he was available. It was Khambaliq Stay By Me, but she was already destined for Sweden. Isabella told me she had another litter. We went into a room, and she showed me the puppies one by one—they were only 31 days old. The last one she picked up barely fit in the palm of her hand. I fell in love immediately. Isabella told me then.
Shar Pei are like cherries; you can never have just one.
I asked to see them better, and she brought all the babies into the living room, placing them on a bergère chair because they were so tiny. I asked if the little boy was available. He was. George was hesitant at first... We returned to Athens, and after two days of talking, he finally said "yes."
On February 5, 2006, I traveled to Italy with my friend Maria Nikolaou to pick him up. We had a wonderful, fun, and quite eventful time. Isabella used to call the puppy "Peterino," because his father was Chancjs Gru Fun All Over (known as Peter). I asked her to name him Baci, after the dog I was supposed to get from Dee Dee. And so, KHAMBALIQ Baci All Over came into our lives and changed everything.
Ten days after bringing Baci to Greece, a package arrived from America. It was from Dee Dee. A huge surprise! Inside was a video cassette of "The Puppy Puzzle" (a video illustrating what to look for as a breeder and potential pet owner in an 8-week-old puppy), a show lead, a beautiful leather show lead, and a card that read:
Thank you for being my friend and for all you have done for me. I love my ads. Good luck with Baci II. Love D2.

I felt such a sense of responsibility and a deep realization that breeding isn't just about selling a dog. Even though I didn't get a dog from her, she sent me one of the best gifts I have ever received. It was a gift that defined my path in breeding and gave me the foundation for our future choices.
That is how Baci's story began, and how another great breeder, Isabella Pizzamiglio, entered our lives.
Dee Dee and Isabella became our mentors and, above all, our dear friends. It is so important to have people by your side with whom you share the same love, the same vision, and the same creative "passion"...
Countless trips to Italy followed. There, I observed and recorded on video the process of tacking in Shar Pei, whenever it was deemed necessary. I came to deeply understand the WHY behind it—that it is a protective measure and doesn't necessarily mean the dog will have entropion issues in the future.
Usually, between the ages of 9 and 25 days, some puppies are very "chunky" and have heavy wrinkling. As their muscles are still developing, they are sometimes unable to lift the weight of their own eyelids. Furthermore, as they all nurse together, a sibling’s nail might accidentally scratch a puppy's eye. In these cases, tacking acts as a vital safeguard.
Together with Isabella, we attended many conformation shows and the famous Specialties organized by the Shar Pei Club Italia.
It was also from Isabella that we acquired Scaly (daughter of True Style) during a very difficult time, after we lost our Zizel and her puppies. Later, Chipi (Khambaliq Chipria Hug me) entered our lives—another major chapter in our breeding journey. Chipi, a daughter of Khambaliq Margems Life Style and sister to True Style, left her own significant mark on our history.

November 25th remains the hardest day of my life—the day we lost our beautiful Zizel and her eight unborn puppies. It happened right before my eyes, just ten days before she was due to whelp. We were like zombies, wandering in a haze of profound heartbreak.
When we lost Zizel, the void was immense; our home felt too small for our grief, even though we were still waiting for Roxy’s litter. I remember it like it was yesterday—we went to a large shopping mall to buy something electronic... a camera, a PlayStation, something, anything to fill the emptiness and soothe our sorrow. While we were in the store, George looked at me and said: 'Why don't you call Isabella? Maybe she has a little girl, a daughter of True Style, that she could give us?'
Indeed, we both rushed out of the store, and before we even reached the car, I was already on the phone to Italy. Two days later, I took a same-day flight to Italy... and that is how, on the return journey, we first met Scaly.
Shortly after, Roxy’s litter faced a similar tragedy, but out of that darkness, a miracle was born..
Phoebe was born nearly lifeless. I rubbed her incessantly for five to six hours, from 11 at night until 5 in the morning. That was when she finally urinated on me... My vet had previously warned me that this puppy would not survive, and even her own mother had cast her aside. But when that happened, my vet told me it was the first good sign.
I stayed by her side constantly for two weeks, feeding her every two hours. Her little legs were like plasticine, completely lacking strength. All of this happened because Roxy had slipped on the balcony just before whelping and injured her leg. The pain prevented her from having a calm and smooth labor, leading to a series of complications.
Out of seven puppies, only three survived, and we lost another one the following day to aspiration. The weeks that followed were grueling. I closed my office, as it was impossible for me to leave the house even for a moment. During that period, my hair turned white from the sheer stress and agony. Losing Zizel and Roxy’s puppies was a devastating shock that scarred us deeply.
Dr. Grigoropoulos explained that even though the baby survived, the fact that she spent so much time on the brink of death could potentially leave her with some brain dysfunction. We would have to wait nine months for a re-examination to ensure everything was fine. This is how Phoebe entered our lives—a soul destined to become our brightest star. From the very first moment, I wanted to keep her, but George objected, arguing that we couldn't have so many dogs in an apartment.
It was our anniversary... I was sitting in the living room watching TV. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Phoebe pacing up and down the hallway with a bow around her neck. Suddenly, she came and sat right in front of me, looking up at me with a face so sweet and 'silly,' just like a cartoon character.
Looking closer, I saw a tiny note attached to the bow. It said:
'Hi! This morning, your beloved husband caught me and asked if I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you... and I said: I do!'
And that was how Phoebe finally and officially became a permanent part of our lives."

Eukanuba World Challenge: Semi-Final & Opening Ceremony Part 2
Matgo Law… A name that serves as a symbol for anyone who truly loves the breed and has seriously researched its history.
In 2006, the Shar Pei Club of Slovenia organized a landmark event. Marge Calltharp was the judge, while Dee Dee Wells and Matgo Law were the guests of honor. When I first read about this event, I told myself that it was impossible not to be there to meet these legends in person. I was already in contact with Dee Dee at the time.
So, we arranged to travel with our 10-month-old Baci to compete, attend the breed seminar, and—most importantly—see other Shar Pei (69 were entered) and socialize with owners and breeders from 12 different countries.
It was an exceptional show that truly "bit" us with the dog show bug, especially since our young Baci was awarded Best of Opposite Sex (BOS).
However, the most significant part was meeting the breed's pioneers and hearing the history of the Shar Pei "firsthand." A friendship with Matgo Law began there—one that remains strong to this day. We have met many times since then, but the ultimate highlight for us was the Mega Shar Pei Specialty held in Greece in 2015.
As President of the Greek Shar Pei Club, we organized three Specialties with three judges from different countries: Claire Davis (UK), Viera Straviasca (Slovakia), and, of course, Matgo Law. Three judges with different perspectives and views on the breed, each selecting different dogs for Best of Breed. Finally, using a point system, all three judges independently scored every dog based on the American Kennel Club (AKC) point sheet (evaluating specific parts like the head, type, movement, temperament, etc.).
It was the most beautiful event we have ever organized. We had a wonderful time with the community, featuring a health seminar with our veterinarian, Dr. Ch. Grigoropoulos, and a seminar by Matgo Law on how the breed was saved from extinction. During my personal time with Matgo, I learned details that helped me clear up many things regarding the correct breed type and realized how many myths and lies actually surround the Shar Pei.
It was also during this Specialty that the first stones were laid for the European Shar Pei Club—a dream of mine that finally became a reality.

One day, while sitting in our living room, I was leafing through "The Barker" magazine. It is the official publication of the Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America, where I was a member. As I was browsing, a specific advertisement caught my eye. It featured a stunning horse-coat puppy, and underneath, it read: "Brekkukot". The sire was Excalibur Roma Eight. It was the most beautiful horse-coat Shar Pei puppy I had ever seen. However, at that particular moment, I felt deep down that I wasn't quite ready yet.
Generally speaking, I wasn't a huge fan of the horse-coat. Since I had mostly owned brush-coat dogs up to that point, I truly preferred their look. However, I was well aware that in breeding, to achieve a correct result, you eventually have to incorporate a horse-coat dog. Since Scaly was related to our other dogs, I knew that when the time came to breed her, I would need to find the right male from a completely different bloodline.
With that image still in the back of my mind, a year later, I found the contact information and reached out to Susanna Björnsson. I asked her if she could ship semen from the dog I so desperately wanted. At the time, Susanna lived in Iceland but was staying with her family in the US. We made all the arrangements; I purchased the semen, and she was preparing to ship it to Greece.
One night, as I was drifting off to sleep, I heard the email notification from the living room. I had set a unique sound for every Shar-Pei-related communication. I jumped out of bed. The email stated that the semen quality wasn't great, likely due to the heat, and that because of a serious personal matter, she wanted to know if I was interested in purchasing Token himself!
"It was 3 AM. I rushed into the bedroom and woke George up: 'Wake up, I have news! Susanna is offering to sell us Token!' Poor George just told me we’d talk in the morning, but I couldn't sleep a wink..."
It was 3 AM. I rushed into the bedroom and woke George up: "Wake up, I have news! Susanna is offering to sell us Token!" Poor George just told me we’d talk in the morning, but I couldn't sleep a wink. First thing in the morning, I called Stelios Makaritis, then Secretary of the Kennel Club of Greece. I explained the situation, and his response was: "Are you still thinking about it?" I hung up and immediately messaged Susanna that I was buying him.
It was late July, close to my birthday, and we were heading to Kythnos for our August vacation. One morning on the island, I received an email saying Token would arrive from the US in five days. It was a logistical nightmare since we couldn't both leave the island. That’s when my friend, Evi Zerde, stepped in; she offered to pick me up from the port, drive me to the airport, host me for the night, and take me back to the ferry the next morning.
And that is exactly what happened. Arriving at the airport, I was a bundle of nerves. The dog was already 19 months old, and I didn't know what to expect. I saw Token in his travel crate, his eyes wide with fear—which was only natural. But the moment I let him out, he was perfectly fine and gave me my first kiss. That was it... he was officially our dog.
Token’s arrival sparked many stories and even some animosity, as I later learned that several people in Europe had tried to buy him, but Susanna chose us. Rumors even started circulating that there was "something wrong" with him and that he was sent to Greece to be hidden. Because Token lived in Greece and not in Central Europe, an informal "boycott" began. No one wanted his offspring. We struggled to find homes for his puppies, which is why we didn't breed him extensively. Yet, he was a magnificent dog—vibrant, high-energy, and the most intelligent Shar Pei I had ever known up to that point.
True Style (Khambaliq Margem True Style) was a son of Elite's Cadillac Style, and Token (Brekkukots Roman'cin The Stone) was a son of Asias Excalibur Romans Eight R.O.M. and Elite's Southern Belle.
To this day, both remain recognized as Top Producers in the USA. Most importantly, both carry the prestigious "Elite" bloodline, which for us has consistently been one of the finest and most influential over the years.

Η Fibi (Precious Hug True Secret of Life) αναδείχθηκε Top Dog στην Ελλάδα και αναγνωρίστηκε ως ένα από τα 42 καλύτερα σκυλιά στον κόσμο στο Eukanuba World Challenge 2010.

"It was 3 AM. I rushed into the bedroom and woke George up: 'Wake up, I have news! Susanna is offering to sell us Token!' Poor George just told me we’d talk in the morning, but I couldn't sleep a wink..."
True Style (Khambaliq Margem True Style) was the son of AM. CH. ELITE'S CADILLAC STYLE and grandson of AKC Ch. CSPCA Ch. Meiting Luv Wun McMurfee.

BREKKUKOTS Roman'Cin The Stone (Token), son of Asias Excalibur Romans Eight R.O.M, introduced the horse coat to our lives. Full of energy and stubbornness, he left his own unique mark.

Η Fibi (Precious Hug True Secret of Life) αναδείχθηκε Top Dog στην Ελλάδα και αναγνωρίστηκε ως ένα από τα 42 καλύτερα σκυλιά στον κόσμο στο Eukanuba World Challenge 2010.

CH. ELITE'S CADILLAC STYLE και εγγονός του AKC Ch. CSPCA Ch. Meiting Luv Wun McMurfee — σκυλιά που μέχρι σήμερα παραμένουν οι κορυφαίοι επιβήτορες στην Αμερική (Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America - CSPCA).

Σημαντικό κεφάλαιο στην εκτροφή μας ήταν επίσης ο BREKKUKOTS Roman'Cin The Stone (Token), από τους εκτροφείς Susanna Bjornsson και Sandy Woodall. Γιος του Asias Excalibur Romans Eight R.O.M (Top Sire USA), ο Token μας έφελε το κοντότριχο (horse coat) Σαρ Πέι στη ζωή μας.
